High Divide - Hoh River Traverse Backpacking

High Divide - Hoh River Traverse (Backpacking) Professional Review and Guide

"Based upon decades of voting with their boots, backpackers have selected this as the supreme wilderness experience in the Olympic Mountains. Every attraction that makes this range so magnificent can be seen at its best here. The hike includes the finest rainforests, best viewpoints, largest glaciers, and most colorful flower fields in the Olympics. Unfortunately, the unwelcome qualities of this range are also extreme on this hike.

These are the most crowded backcountry trails in the Olympics. Snowfall in the high country is so heavy many trails remain buried until late in the summer, while in the valleys all that precipitation falls in unending volumes of rain that will test both your patience and the waterproof claims of the best equipment. In good weather the scenery is superb, but pretty pictures don’t tell the whole story. Note: Hikers with only one vehicle can use a shuttle service to move their car between trailheads while they hike."

It is worth going into the 7 Lakes Basin, Clear Lake has only one camp spot...so enjoy the skinny dipping. The huckleberries are awesome in mid August, we did not see bears, but lots of droppings. Discussion with the rangers revealed no problems with bears. We saw no cougar, but did hear of some encounters, with positive results. We spent 4 days backpacking and saw many options for other camps that will make a future trip just as great.
What can I say? This is premier Washington State backcountry that can be enjoyed only as a backpack or 19-mile day loop, which several we met were doing. However, the beauty of Mt. Olympus, Mt. Tom, the Hoh valley and the 7-lakes basin should demand lengthy rest stops, swimming or bathing and animal viewing. We took five days/four nights with three easy out-and-back day trips and finished our week with a wonderful swim and lunch at the SolDuc Hot Springs resort. Weather was glorious (not always, I understand). Great trip!
