Grand Valley

Grand Valley Professional Review and Guide

"Hike from the highest trailhead in the Olympics along a spectacular open ridge, accompanied by wildflowers and whistling marmots on this 7.4-mile out-and-back hike. You’ll get lofty views into the heart of the Olympic’s Bailey Range and out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Descend to a string of emerald valley lakes, pleasant destinations for a day hike or overnight stay.

A hike starting high on a ridge between heaven and earth, this rewarding trail from Obstruction Point to Grand Valley will allow you to experience the wild alpine country of the Olympics with a minimum of effort, since the trail is level or downhill most of the way and starts at the highest trailhead in the Olympics. (If you’re backpacking, here’s your opportunity to pack in the extra-heavy bottle of red wine.)"

The morning of our trek the ranger described the conditions to get out to obstruction point as trecherous driving. Challenge! We began this amazing hike in completely fogged in conditions with freezing rain. Down through a ground zero looking dessert of shale chips on a cuttingly windy ridge. 1 hour in the pay off began as we viewed the amazing bailey ridge and straits of san juan de fuca in the distance. Through a stunning conifer forest where we unearthed groundling mushrooms ( that sell in pikes for $40 lb) until we finally hit the lake and the switchback. The alternate route went down another mile before we finally started to move up hill......way up hill...look out calves we keep on going up, through an enchanted mossy forest to the flats and stunning wheat like fields until the last mile 1/2. once again in a desrt of shale chips switchbacking our way up with no energy and 20 minutes of day light to go. we stop and eat an orange the ice pellets are back and I wonder how we can camp with no equipment in these conditions finally victory is ours as we make the trail head with 15 mins of light to go! What a great day!! The scenery is worth the pain
