Eagle Point

Eagle Point Professional Review and Guide

"With the sweeping line of white mountains that ends at glacier-capped
Mount Olympus stretching before them, snowshoers may wonder why
they ever bothered visiting this area in the summer."

This is a fun winter snowshoe or ski route which can be absolutely wonderful or absolute hell. I have done this trip several times and this last one was absolute hell. The first night at the waterhole was just great, its a nice area for larger groups with room to spread out a bit. The second night was spent at the saddle just below obstruction peak, where it started raining and then snowing and then some more rain just to make sure we had had enough. A very weird weather pattern that cleared up on the third night of our groups stay. The positive note was that there were plenty of large snow drifts around. Luckily we dug a large snowcave for our group to sleep, eat and hang out in. Bring shovels and maybe avalanche transceivers if conditions warrant. You can rent snowshoes in Port Townsend at the Wildernest Outdoor Store. Don't get me wrong It can be very scenic on Hurricane ridge but this week it was rough. Check the weather, If it is getting worse just get out.
