Cannon Mountain and McClellan Peak Professional Review and Guide
"While working as a topographer for the USGS, A. H. Sylvester named the group of rock-basin lakes nestled in the Cashmere Crags of the Stuart Range “Enchantment” to express his reaction — and this reaction has been shared by all who have followed into this magical realm. Dazzling ponds and gnarled and twisted trees contrast with slabs of ice-polished stone. The granite blazes pink in the intensity of a setting summer sun. Fuzzy larch needles stand out boldly on the ridgecrests above the Snow Lakes. This is a land of extremes — from warm, luxuriant beauty to stunning, austere grandeur. The “Lost Plateau” of the Enchantments, with its wryly imaginative place names, has become a haven for the hiker, backpacker, scrambler, and rock climber. Cross-county travel is marvelously unconstrained in the uplands. Many of the highest points are scrambles: Little Annapurna, Colchuck, Dragontail, and Enchantment peaks make up this group. But two other high mountains are more complicated alpine climbs."
