Observe hawks migrating south along the ridges of the eastern Cascades. Sixteen species of North American birds of prey funnel through this corridor. A warm, sunny day with a light to moderate south wind is best for hawk soaring; when it is too windy the numbers go down. Watch for a period of cold rainy weather, then go up to Chelan Ridge on the first sunny day. The raptors tend to back up in bad weather, hunkering down in the shelter of the trees. They continue their journey south when the weather turns. Raptors can also feel the pressure change before a front; they will often fly before the front comes in.
