Juniper Dunes Professional Review and Guide
"This easy round-trip springtime day hike will lead you through one of eastern Washington’s most intriguing landscapes and wilderness areas, past stands of juniper and over impressive sand dunes.
Sand dunes aren’t unheard of in eastern Washington, as they commonly form along the banks of the Columbia and Snake Rivers. But nowhere else are they as abundant as in the Juniper Dunes, where nearly 10 square miles of sand dunes and groves of western juniper are protected as wilderness under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This is the only wilderness area in the entire Columbia Basin and a fascinating insight into this remote, arid part of Washington. The trailhead, the only access point to the wilderness, lies on the property of the Juniper Dunes Ranch, only 100 yards from the wilderness boundary. The owner graciously allows day hiking from March through May only, due to high summer fire danger, and no overnight parking is permitted."
