If you are looking for shrub-steppe birding at its finest, its hard to beat the Hanford Reach National Monument. Along with the last free-flowing stretch of the Columbia River, the monument offers the best of eastern Washington birding rolled up into its component parts—the Saddle Mountain National Wildlife Refuge, the Wahluke Slope Wildlife Area, and the Fitzner/Eberhardt Arid Lands Ecology Reserve. The trick is knowing how to see as much of the birding habitat as possible with limited access to most areas in the monument. Habitats: Lowland riparian, shrub-steppe, cliffs. Specialty birds: American White Pelican; Barrow’s Goldeneye; Golden and Bald Eagles; Swainson’s and Ferruginous Hawks; Chukar; Bonaparte’s Gull; Burrowing Owl; Sage Thrasher; Sage Sparrow.
