Orcas Landing - Crow Valley - East Sound - Orcas Island

Orcas Landing - Crow Valley - East Sound - Orcas Island Professional Review and Guide

"A moderate ride through a pastoral valley and past historic villages to Orcas Island’s center, with several side trips along the way. Orcas Road (also called Horseshoe Highway) is the main road on Orcas Island that links the ferry landing to the village of East Sound.

The route can be busy, particularly around ferry arrival times, and cyclists will find little in the way of a road shoulder, making the traffic feel at times a little too close for comfort. Luckily, there are some alternative routes to East Sound that will not only get you off major sections of this road, but also give you a look at some of the quieter and more scenic sides of Orcas Island."

I rode Mt Constitution and the loop with the "wall" off of crow loop. Mt consitution is a challenge. 5 miles of 10-15%grade with hairpin switchbacks. The view is terrific, the descent was scary, and I'm glad to say I rode it, but overall Orcas is too busy, roads crowded, and little room for cyclists. We had to drive our bikes to places, then ride. I liked the other islands better, but Orcas is definantly the most challenging. The "Wall" near the town of Eastsound was abit of a letdown. It was steep (16%), but the ride on San Juan on the west side by Lime Kiln park is alot better.
