Upper and Lower Lena lakes are night and day. Lower Lena is fl anked by oldgrowth forest, easy to get to, accessible most of the year, and is one of the most popular backpacking destinations in the Olympics, especially for families. Upper Lena sits in a stunning high basin surrounded by alpine meadows and steep rocky peaks. The trail to it is steep, eroded, and at times a roottangled, rocky mess. But that hasn’t dampened its appeal—it’s one of the prettiest spots in the eastern reaches of the Olympics and is a launchpad for further high-country adventures.
