Obstruction Pass Trail

Obstruction Pass Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A secluded Orcas Island beach offers children good beachcombing, with small coves on the west side that are safe for wading and swimming. Reach this Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Recreation Area and Campsite by a short forest walk to a pebble beach. Kids can watch for kayakers, who like to put in on this beach.

Although this is a short hike, plan to spend a good part of the day seeing the many sights at this lesser-known park. Be certain to check the ferry schedule before you go, and remember that on sunny summer weekends, the wait for the ferry can be long. Reservations for camping on the island should be made well in advance for the best chance of getting a spot.

At high tide children will enjoy playing and looking for agates and other treasures on the steep beach made up of multicolored pebbles. At low tide they can explore tide pools on either side of the bay. Kayakers wearing hooded wet suits frequently arrive or depart, providing entertainment for curious children, and yachts sometimes sail in to tie up to one of the mooring buoys just offshore."
