Cape Horn

Cape Horn Professional Review and Guide

"This is one of the newest trails in the Columbia River Gorge, and it’s easy to see why it has become so popular. You can enjoy spectacular views of the Columbia from high up on the hill or just 200 feet above a riverside railroad, and in between you have a pleasant walk through forest and rolling-hill countryside reminiscent of a stroll in Europe."

I took two 5-year olds and a 2-year old into the lower cave. It was great. Make sure they are dressed for COLD (42F is cold for anyone). I gave the 5-year olds headlamps which they thought was was cool as #!$@. I brought a larger torch flashlight which is what you really need. We didn't get to the upper cave, but this is a worthwhile place to come visit.

We should have looked at the review on this one before going on the upper cave! We packed right for the cave lights and things but should have went with the long sleves and pants. It take some getting uses to, total darkness! We dive with some cavers that recommened that if we are going to get serious after ape caves to pickup helmits. I love REI, so I picked up two with lights before the ape caves. This cave is not that bad in most spots, but I did hit my head one good one. It would have made a mark! This cave is a must for everyone that wants to see how things look inside the earth. Wear good boots and gloves for the upper cave. Knee pads would be good, you will do some crawling. Have a good time.

We choose the "difficult" path and had a great "Indiana Jones" experience. First I thought that we had taken a wrong turn because all we saw was a HUGE wall of boulders blocking the path. THEN, we realized, oh, we are supposed to CLIMB the boulders! After about 15 or so climbs later and a great opportunity to rock climb an 8 foot petrified mud wall, we emerged back into the open. Definately bring at least three sources of light. You will want to wear pants and gloves, unless you aren''t worried about scrapes on your hands and legs. Definately not for the claustrophobic. A MUST-hike for active visitors to the area.
