Road 5640-101: Taylor River Professional Review and Guide

"The first time I saw Otter Falls and little Lipsy Lake was from my car window. The Lake Dorothy road was under construction. It was to be a scenic drive up the Taylor River, past Snoqualmie Lake, down to Lake Dorothy, and out US Highway 2. Although there is still a road sign pointing to Lake Dorothy, there were enough green-bonded people to stop the road to the lake, which is now in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. While the road sign still points to Lake Dorothy, the road builders have given up, and the Taylor River road has become a delightful foot trail through green forest.

The river is always within sound, and the many sharp peaks of Garfield Mountain can sometimes be seen above the treetops. Doing research for a new hikes book, by foot I went back to Otter Falls, but in the ensuing twenty-five years, trees have grown up and are now hiding the falls. I walked 6 miles before I realized I had gone too far. At home, poring over my maps, I found my mistake. Even so, on my second try I still had a problem finding the exact place to leave the trail, and ended up pushing through a dense jungle of slide alder."
