Melakwa Lake

Melakwa Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Crowds disappear once you are past Denny Creek’s waterfalls—the hordes thinning to a respectable number of serious hikers looking for an alpine lake experience. And what an experience!

The trail ?nally crests Hemlock Pass and descends moderately to Melakwa Lake, a broad alpine wonder with rocky slopes leading straight down into the crystal water. Those bright waters also re?ect the craggy peaks that ring the lake: most notably Chair and Kaleetan peaks."

"Most hikers know the Denny Creek Trail for its waterslide—admittedly a worthy goal, especially on a hot day or with small children in tow. Ah! But there is so much more to amaze and delight farther up the trail, including old-growth forest, two long waterfalls, wildflower gardens, and a subalpine lake with limited camping possibilities. This is a popular trail; don’t be surprised to see large groups of people, especially on weekends." Read more

Both Upper Melakwa and Melakwa Lake are spectacular, pristine alpine lakes. Such a wonderful, fun hike and the camping at the lake is stellar, too. Monstrous mosquitoes, so bug spray is a must. The wildflowers were crazy blooming on 7/21 and there's a lovely waterfall on the route. We could still see some snow past Upper Melakwa to the pass.

A hot and sunny Sunday, and a busy trail... at least the first portion. The trail is in good condition. 4.5 miles to the lake, none of which is too steep or strenuous. The lakes are beautiful. The upper lake was less crowded and offered better views in my opinion.
