Granite Creek Road

Granite Creek Road Professional Review and Guide

"What a difference a gate can make! My first experience with the Granite Creek Road was in a car. We did not stay long. It was a noisy place, with jeeps, fat-tired trucks, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, and an assortment of family cars attempting to be off-road vehicles, all grinding their way up and down the steep grade as fast as they could shift gears.

The destination for most of these visitors was the old Thompson Lake trailhead, which was then an easy one-mile hike in the wilderness. Avoiding the beer drinking, radio-toting crowd, we branched off to Granite Lakes and found them in a tangle of brush, nearly inaccessible to all but the most determined jungle explorers. Fifteen years later we revisited Granite Creek Road. With a sturdy gate to ensure peace from the start, we discovered beautiful forests, a cascading creek, excellent scenery, a couple of good-looking lakes, and plenty of solitude."

Peaceful trail gradually gaining elevation lined with variety of spring flowers at this time of the year. The trail did not get maintained recently so be prepared to duck under and climb over trees that got blown down across the trail. We encountered them in several areas, yet got over most of the obstacles effortlessly. There were still some snow patches on the upper part of the trail. Mostly packed easy to walk on snow. We got into deeper snowfield just before we hit the lakes but still managed to get through comfortably without snow gear.
