Edgar Rock

Edgar Rock Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"When driving State Route 410, it’s hard to miss the giant monolith on the south side of the road. Edgar Rock was once used as a fire lookout site, but little remains of the structure. Instead, the rocky top is now a fine place to reflect and enjoy views of surrounding peaks and the town of Cliffdell below.

In the late 1850s a man named John Edgar, a scout and guide for military expeditions over the mountain passes, was in the area of Edgar Rock when he came upon a group of hostile Native Americans looking for the troops he was scouting for. Legend has it he heroically communicated with the Natives and defused the situation in time for the troops to retreat before casualties resulted. Sadly, he was killed a year later during one of the many battles of that time."
