Mount Vernon Cruise

Mount Vernon Cruise Professional Review and Guide

"This is a beautiful ride across the brilliant green Skagit River delta, along the windy shore of Padilla Bay, and through the historic Samish Valley. This route consists of low-traffic farm roads over flat valleys.

Fir Island includes the Skagit Wildlife Area, an extensive refuge that serves as an important resting point for birds on their annual migrations. Watch for deer, muskrat, foxes, coyotes, hawks, and all kinds of migrating birds as you ride through the quite farmland.

Terrain: roads range from good to excellent, very flat."

The map directions were accurate. I would note to cyclists to be aware of narly and persistent headwinds. We encountered them on a good amount of the second half of the loop (the long route) and they really took a toll on me; however my male partner faired better. It was a pretty, low traffic, country-road ride. Detour one street north of Young Road and you will find a small wine tasting shack for Challenger Ridge wines, $1 for 2 tastings!
