Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

    Susan Elderkin
"Hike through a steep-walled slickrock canyon that was scoured clear by a massive lahar during Mount St. Helens’ eruption in 1980. The river serpentines like a whitewater theme park ride, tumbling over waterfalls on its path down the Muddy River. The water pools invitingly, but this is no theme park ride. The hike begins on a barrier-free, but steep, paved trail that leads to an overlook of Lava Falls. As you walk, imagine the scene in May 1980 when 30 feet of ice from Mount St. Helens’ Shoestring Glacier, combined with ash, rock, and pumice, raced down this canyon, consuming trees and vegetation in a 15foot wave of muck."
