"This short trail has plenty to see. The views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan can only be described as “Wow!” Because the trail sees a lot of feet, the plant life suffers, but if you don’t have much time to hike, or can’t hike too much, and still want to see an excellent representation of the local flora, this is the trail for you. That forbidding hunk of rock and ice looming over you to the east is Mount Shuksan. Its impressive beauty is accessible by finding the Artist Ridge trail in the large parking area where WA 542 terminates. Begin walking on an asphalt trail behind the reader board at the east end of the parking lot. It quickly splits; go left and reach a viewpoint with interpretive displays." Read more

"A short, gentle paved loop leads to kid-size, heather-framed tarns (small lakes sculpted in bedrock by a passing glacier) and summer snowbanks, dramatic views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan, and lessons in volcano behavior. Signs along the way give explanatory geological information, in terms kids can understand, about the formation of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker. The trail ends a few feet from the top of Artists Ridge. For those with very young children or those intimidated by the steep Table Mountain Trail, this makes a picturesque short alternative." "If you’re pressed for time, make this the one hike you do on your visit to the Mount Baker–Mount Shuksan area. You get the best of everything— countless Cascade peaks, subalpine meadows, snowfields for silly August snowball fights, and close-up views of both Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan—with the least amount of effort. The view from the parking lot itself is awesome, but for more, find the paved trailhead at the southeast corner of the parking lot (Mount Shuksan side) and follow the trail for about 100 yards to a south-facing vista. (In theory the trail has interpretive signs, but either vandals or the 25 feet of snow that falls here each year have done away with them.)" Read more
