"Salmo Divide Trail No. 535 begins as an old road for 1 mile to the wilderness boundary. "Follow a mile-high ridge along the Washington-Idaho border through the lonely Salmo-Priest Wilderness, savoring old-growth forest, alpine meadows, expansive views, and solitude. Hike through patches of beargrass and groves of trees scratched by bears through one of the richest bear habitats in the state. And bear left or right onto spur trails to old lookout sites if you please. If a shuttle can’t be arranged, out-and-back hikes from either direction will satisfy, and a nice 16-mile loop can be made on the Shedroof Divide from Gypsy Meadows by utilizing the Shedroof Cut-off and Thunder Creek trails." "There’s no higher point in Washington State north or east of Shedroof Mountain, in the Salmo-Priest Wilderness. Views of rugged mountains spread out to infinity. The walk to the former fire lookout passes through a landscape that’s similar to the Cascades, but the terrain is more remote and has far less human presence." Read more
