Lopez Island Mackaye Harbor

Lopez Island: Mackaye Harbor Professional Review and Guide

"With an annual rainfall of 22 inches, Lopez Island is located in the banana belt of Washington. Mackaye Harbor on the island’s southwest side has an arid landscape in summer with golden meadows, warm water, and calm bays. It’s an idyllic place for paddlers of all levels.

Boaters mostly avoid the harbor and its bays due to shallow depths and numerous exposed and hidden rocks. Offshore, Long, Charles, and Iceberg islands are part of the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuge, but are off-limits for landing. Advanced paddlers can use the bay for a launch to enter current-laden Cattle Pass, cross to San Juan Island or to the rock garden south of Iceberg Point."
