Long Beach & Ilwaco, WA Professional Review and Guide

"Pointing northward from Cape Disappointment and the mouth of the Columbia River is a long finger of surf-lined sand, shrubs, and scrub forest that separates the Pacific Ocean from Willapa Bay. Strung along the peninsula are seven tiny towns that offer visitors a wide range of attractions. Chief among these in the south are Long Beach and Ilwaco, with Seaview in between. Ilwaco is a waterfront community where commercial, sport, and charter boats are moored a short distance from the Columbia River bar.

Long Beach is a resort community with an abundance of travel accommodations and access to its namesake beach, which city fathers have proclaimed the “world’s longest beach.” The peninsula’s climate is ideal for growing cranberries, which are a major cash crop, with 465 acres in production. The Ocean Spray cooperative here has produced as much as 3.7 million pounds of berries in a single year. On the bay side of the peninsula, oysters are big business. All the oyster beds on the bay are privately owned, so there is no public harvest. Fresh oysters are available at local seafood markets, and most area restaurants serve them."
