Trout Lake Professional Review and Guide
"This is a day hike or backpack to an alpine lake tucked between Jack Ridge and Eightmile Mountain.
Trout Lake is a small lake tucked in a basin above Jack Creek, below Windy Pass, reached via a 6.2-mile trail starting at Icicle Creek. This trail is more popular with fishermen and horsemen than hikers. That said, if you are looking for a quiet lake hike that isn’t crowded, Trout Lake may be a good one. The trail was rerouted a few years back and now begins from the Jack-Trout trailhead.
Get your permit at the trailhead and start hiking. Stay left at the first junction shortly up the trail, and drop briefly to cross Jack Creek, cross the very sturdy footbridge, then climb the opposite stream bank and ascend forested slopes another 0.7 mile to the Trout Creek Trail junction. Switch back sharply to the left, and climb a series of long, lazy, dusty switchbacks, gaining only 500 feet in the next mile, then contour around the foot of Jack Ridge into Trout Creek canyon. The trail ascends the canyon, contouring several hundred feet above Trout Creek amid pines and silver firs, gaining scarcely 500 feet in the next 2.5 miles."
