Spider Meadow Trail

Spider Meadow Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Beneath a spectacular headwall of cliffs and waterfalls sprawls a marvelous wide meadow valley, the reward for a 5-mile walk into the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Camping is amid flower fields, beside a cold meandering stream. The deer here are almost tame."

It was a great 2 day, 1 night trip in early fall. The views from the top of Spider Gap were spectacular! The distant peaks, meadows below and overall size of the valley below were awesome. The first day we hiked up from the trailhead through the forest for 2-3 hours. The climb was easy and the trail was in good condition. Upon arriving into Spider Meadow, we came across numerous campsite locations. After eating lunch on a huge boulder at the south end of the meadow, we started to climb toward the gap. The meadow was wide at first, but quickly disappeared into the forest. We hit the trail junction for taking a left up the final steep ascent to Spider Gap. This ascent was crazy. We climbed approximately 1,000 feet in 0.4 miles. If it wasn’t for the awesome views all around, we probably would have turned back. Be careful during this section, the drop offs were intimidating. Upon reaching the final campground, we hit snow!! Despite having a hard time finding a flat surface, we did find a decent spot on a point overlooking the entire valley – again, the views were stellar. Despite having arrived early into camp at 4pm, we decided the wait until the morning the climb farther up to Spider Gap Glacier above. Bad move!! We woke up the next morning with over 5 inches of fresh snow! Due to poor visibility and our lack of mountaineering tools (we would have needed ice axes, etc), we reluctantly had to descend back to the parking lot. Despite our disappointment, this is a great 2 day / 1 night hike. We could tell that it must be packed during the summer months (only 30 minutes outside of Leavenworth, WA). So, the fall season is an excellent time to have all the views to yourself. Of course, just be careful for the prospect of snow in late October! Enjoy….
