Icicle Ridge

Icicle Ridge Professional Review and Guide

"“Icicle” is an interpretation of the native word “nasikelt” meaning “steep-sided canyon.” The ridge forming the northern boundary of Icicle Canyon is indeed steep-sided, but by climbing it lengthwise from east to west, you can avoid some of the steepness.

Adequate snow cover is essential for an enjoyable tour, as are an early start and a high level of fitness. Difficulties: Moderate avalanche potential; permit / fee area; not recommended for snowboarders."

After reading the eTrail, I did not believe the author when he said “not recommended for snowboards.” After traversing a long way north, the trail switchbacks very gradually up to ridgeline and that prevented most of my opportunity to ride down. I snowshoed up, but really only needed them at the ridge where the snow was deepest. Skis with skins would have been useful at the top. The views from the ridge are nice overlooking the Leavenworth valley. Best of all, even though the day was clear and sunny, I saw no other people. I know I was not alone though, there were very recent deer and bobcat tracks all along the route.
