Eightmile Lake Trail

Eightmile Lake Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The Icicle River Valley burned in the summer of 1994. At least one-third of the trees along this trail—ponderosa pine, hemlocks, and cedars—were transformed into charred sentinels and silver forest. New life is generating, however, as it always has.

Children will enjoy seeing the vestiges of old stumps surrounded by green growth and hearing the story of searing crown fires roaring up Eightmile Creek. The lake is still a lovely glacier-carved irrigation reservoir with a dam at one end. Poignantly, signs requesting that no campfires be built near the shoreline are posted on burned trees along the shoreline, and the air still smells of fire."

Very nice hike. My wife is not an avid hiker, yet with plenty of time and a nice pace for her, we made it to the lake. No bugs, and hardly any people. But being a Thursday in September, we kind of planned it that way. Took off the boots and dipped out feet in the cool water. The chipmunks are funny and brave. If you sit perfectly still they will come right up to you. We had one that was climbing all over our daypack. Worth the hike.
Bring mosquito repellant. Lots of it. Little eightmile is a nice stop on the way, but eightmile lake may be the best lake I have been able to hike to. Just beautiful. The only downside is that it is really popular and easy enough for kids to do, so expect crowds and do not expect solitude or even quiet. Kind of frustrating that way.
This hike wasn't for fair weather hikers, that's for sure. The showers started soon after we left the trailhead and followed us all the way to the lakes and back. Most of our surrounding area was hiden in the fog so that we could not see any of the high peaks around but both the Small Eightmile Lake and the actual Eightmile Lake sitting in the misty forest with a hint of snow around provided fully satisfying views. There were no other crazy people hikers out there and it was absolutely wonderful to have this otherwise popular trail for ourselves. NOTE: There was a slushy layer of snow on the road and out 2 WD equipped with regular tires started slipping and getting stucked about 1/4 mile before the trailhead. We didn't want to bother with chains for such a short distance and decided to walk the extra half mile instead but winter is approaching and chains might come handy in the area very soon.
