Alpine Lookout Professional Review and Guide
"Alpine Lookout lies 2.5 miles northwest of Round Mountain, the eastern end of Nason Ridge. Although this tour has a long approach, the descent is fairly fast because it is all downhill, and moderate in steepness.
Butcher Creek Road heads north from the highway 0.2 mile east of the rest area. Parking can be difficult to find, especially in midwinter. By means of aggressive snow shoveling, you can sometimes make a place for your car. The parking lot across from the rest area is private—do not park there. Drive or ski Butcher Creek Road, crossing Nason Creek in 0.3 mile. Continue on the road for 1 mile. If you’re on foot, consider leaving the road here (2,500 feet) and climbing due north for 0.3 mile, intersecting the road at 3,100 feet. (This saves 1.2 miles of road skiing.) Once you regain the road, follow it for 1.7 miles to 3,960 feet, then leave the road and start skiing northwest along the summer trail. The trail switchbacks northwest over open slopes around the summit of Round Mountain (2 miles, 5,700 feet)."
