Water defines the environment along the Maple Glade Rain Forest Trail. Nestled in one of the three rain-forest areas on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula, you cannot escape the sounds of water, the water’s sculpting of the forest floor, and the small streams that split off in a thousand places only to merge again on their rush downstream to Lake Quinault. Birds and signs of recently passed elk add to the deep greens of Douglas fir, hemlock, maple, and vine maple above and salmonberry, ferns, oxalis, mosses, and lichen below. Habitats: Mixed forest, riparian, freshwater marsh. Specialty birds: Bald Eagle; Peregrine Falcon; Band-tailed Pigeon; Northern Pygmy-Owl; Rufous Hummingbird; Pileated Woodpecker; Red-breasted Sapsucker; Hammond’s and Pacific-slope Flycatchers; Hutton’s Vireo.
