Cougar Mountain: Wilderness Peak Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Cougar Mountain receives many visitors, but most are concentrated at the Red Town
Trailhead, far from the mountain’s high point at Wilderness Peak. The Wilderness
Creek Trail climbs to the park’s summit via an appealing valley, passing several moderate viewpoints along the way and avoiding some of the crowds."

We parked 1/8 mile before the main trail head --- there's room for about 4-5 cars. Then at first juncture we took a right. This made for a hike that went up and up and up, which is what we love! Not too steep, but steady. The way down we realized we hadn't followed the directions correctly, and found that way lovely as well, with the bridges and streams as described in the book. Nice close in hike, not too many people, good exercise.
Definitely enjoyed the hike although I don't give it a high rating, mostly because the views were minimal. Quiet area, very few people. Steep in places.
This hike is nothing special. It is a good hike for exercise. There is not much to see but there are a lot of offshoot trails. There was a fair amount of traffic on the trail. A blend of hikers and runners and even a couple of bicyclists.
This was my first time on Cougar Mtn. This was a good alternative to chaining up and fighting the icy roads further east. The woods are not overly dense and so lots of light filters in, even on overcast days. There are no views on this loop but the trees and the hills offer protection from the wind on a cool day. The trail was not very crowded at all. The similarity of trail names can be confusing, but good maps are provided at the trail head and so if you read them closely you'll be okay. The trail provides a good work out with it's change in grade, but without all the short switch backs of nearby Mt Si.
