Smith Creek Trail

Smith Creek Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is a stark river valley walk, providing an in-depth examination of a mudflow valley and the forest it pierces. Smith Creek isn’t as well known, nor perhaps as scenic, as its two nearby neighbors, Lava Canyon and Ape Canyon. But Smith has something those don’t: solitude. Few folks venture up this trail, so chances are good you’ll have it to yourself.

The trail starts west, rolling up the Muddy River valley toward the Lava Canyon Trail. About a mile up this forested trail, you’ll meet that trail and turn right to descend
back down the valley, now on the north side. Another mile of hiking down through the rocky debris in the floodplain at the
confluence of the Muddy River and Smith Creek gets you just across the river from where you started. The trail now turns north and rolls up the creek valley."
