Norway Pass and Mount Margaret Trail

Norway Pass and Mount Margaret Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Discover how vegetation is returning to the barren slopes of Norway Pass, swept clean on May 18, 1980, by the eruption of Mount St. Helens. On slopes facing the eruption, trees were flattened in neat rows. However, on the back side of Norway Pass there must have been a whirlwind, for the trees were piled on top of one another in all directions like jackstraws.

On a hot, dry day in 1982, we made our way through the tangled mess—over and under countless logs—to peer into Spirit Lake. To our surprise, we found a small oasis of flowers in bloom on the side of Mount Margaret. The flowers were explained by the deep winter snow that had covered the plants during the blast, protecting them from heat that reached up to 400 degrees, scorching all the plants elsewhere."

"Hike to a high summit in the heart of the blast zone. Marvel at horizon-sweeping views and slopes flush with dazzling wildflowers. From Norway Pass cherish a classic view of Spirit Lake sparkling below the mountain— St. Helens—that greatly altered it. And from Mount Margaret, savor monumental views of the volcanic monument and of other volcanoes north, south, and east. Your route starts on the Boundary Trail, which marks the old boundary between what were once the Columbia and Rainier National Forests, since amalgamated into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Hike west up slopes laid waste in 1980. Nature has been doing a pretty good job re-greening and repopulating the area since. Mountain ashes, huckleberry bushes, and firs carpet the formerly ravaged landscape." Read more
