Boundary West Trail

Boundary West Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens rebuilt this entire area. New lakes were formed, old hills and valleys disappeared. Forests were flattened and rivers were obliterated. An entire landscape was altered, and though it has been nearly three decades since the big boom, recovery is occurring on geologic time, not human time.

That means we still have time to get out and experience the devastation. The best way to experience the majesty of the volcanic power is to get out and just hike the landscape. The Boundary Trail extends across vast sections of the landscape, but sometimes a little goes a long way, so we’re offering bits and pieces. This western segment is a good introduction to the blast."

We did this one as an out and back, starting at the Hummocks Trailhead and heading up to Johnston Ridge, then returning. This was a GREAT choice, because going the other way would have added greatly to the difficulty! We started in the early morning, and it was a bit foggy, but by the time we got to the Loowit overlook, it had lifted for the most part, and we got a great view of the Mountain and crater. We went the rest of the way to Johnston Ridge, and sat and watched the video as a rest, then hiked back down into the valley. It was quite a bit warmer on the way down. The trail itself is mostly a single file path and is a bit steep in places, but we found it to be well marked, and in very good shape. We had a very enjoyable time, and there were lots of places to sit and talk, and take in the view of the incredible change the mountain made in a surprisingly short amount of time. We got back very tired from the hill climb and descent, but we had a great time.
