Glacier Basin

Glacier Basin Professional Review and Guide

"Follow an abandoned road along the wild and temperamental South Fork Sauk River to the once-booming mining town of Monte Cristo. Head up “main street” past relics of a bygone era, following an old miners path high into the barren country beneath the stark and imposing walls and spires of the Monte Cristo peaks.

With snow-fed braided creeks cascading through mounds of talus ringed with wildflowers, the scenery of Glacier Basin is simply breathtaking. And so is the climb—one of the roughest, rockiest, and steepest around."

This is so fantastic, one of my favorite Mount Rainier hikes. It is a mostly forested trail with little breaks here and there with awesome mountain views. The Emmons Moraine Trail offshoot offers more consistent views of the amazing Emmons glacier. In mid-July the weather was perfect, just a few snow patches.

This is certainly one of the more difficult hikes to go on. The guide suggests a mountain bike to get to Monte Cristo, however ,when I traveled it, this was unreasonable as the bridge across the river was out, and several landslides and fallen trees blocked the road. It would be better to travel this trail in July or August, when I went there was solid snow for a good mile up and into the basin, but the end result is well worth the trip.
