Lake Serene and Bridal Veil Falls

Lake Serene and Bridal Veil Falls Professional Review and Guide

"Towering and formidable, Mount Index is perhaps the ?ercest sight along the Stevens Pass Highway. But softening its stark appearance is Bridal Veil Falls. Emanating from beneath Index’s austere crags, the tiered cataract drapes over sheer granite slabs. And feeding those falls is a beautiful re?ecting lake perched beneath those spires.

The trail starts on an old road lined with The second platform (elev. 1450 feet) is just a few mossy maples and alders. Cross a couple of more steps away. Except for late summer when creeks and gradually ascend a thickly forested the falls trickle more than pummel, their roar slope. Bear right at another old road and come to should be pretty deafening at this point. Don a A hiker takes in the view at Lake Serene."

The trail was very well maintained at the time of the hike. The first 1.5 miles to the creek crossing and view of the falls is gentle. After the view from the trail which is fantastic, the trail climbs steeply and in the next 2 miles you climb about 493 wooden steps and many more rock steps provided by the forest service. As you reach the lake the grade lessens as does the tree cover you have for most of the hike. Once you get to the lake there are very few trails and you are left to scramble rock, trees, and brush to move around the lake. The view is worth the pain and the reward on the way down is a soak in the ice cold falls.

Bridal veil falls about halfway up were beautiful. The lake is still mostly frozen over, and due to fog the views of Mt. Index were patchy at best. Great hike.

5/29/06 - trail in good condition most of the way, except for a fallen tree which caused a short muddy detour and landed both my hiking partner and me on our butts. Take the lower diversion - it's less slippery. No snow underfoot to speak of. Lake Serene still frozen in parts. Not much foot traffic on the upper stretch of trail, but plenty on the first mile and a half up to the falls. The falls overlook path is a must- Bridal Veil is astonishing at this time of year

Great lake. It's far enough of a hike to weed out many hikers and those who might not deserve this serene setting. It is still a very popular place with a full parking lot on weekends. Take the side trip on the Bridal Veil Falls Trail as the falls are spectacular. We never found the miner's cabin even through we explored a couple side trails where it was supposed to be located. On the back side of the lake is a huge blocky rock which you can jump off of. It's probably 15-20 feet off the water at the tip and the water is deep enough to safely plunge into. Hike along the right side of the lake along the base of the rock wall to reach this spot - probably a 15 minute hike from the lake outlet.
