Mount Baker Highway

Mount Baker Highway Professional Review and Guide

"A 24-mile road through the northern Cascade Mountains, from rain forest up to rugged timberline. The first 14 miles are mostly straight with a gentle ascent through second-growth forest. As the highway gains 3,200 feet during the final 10 miles, a series of switchbacks affords outstanding views of glacier-carved horns and the awesome face of Mount Shuksan. Traffic on this paved two-lane road is light on weekdays and after Labor Day, but it can be heavy on holidays and during August and September weekends.

The route has some sharp drop-offs and steep cliffs and is not for the fainthearted. There are frequent turnouts for scenic viewing. Special attractions: Salmon and trout fishing, old-growth forests, hiking, alpine and cross-country skiing, river rafting, magnificent scenery. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
