Lake Ann Trail

Lake Ann Trail Professional Review and Guide

"If it’s an up-close-and-personal audience with Mount Shuksan that you want, the Lake Ann Trail is the one for you. After 4 miles or so of ups and downs, you’ll find yourself beside an otherworldly alpine lake of azure blue, staring almost straight up at hanging glaciers thousands of feet overhead.

If the Picture Lake view of Mount Shuksan inspires you (the view that graces countless calendars), this view is one that’ll stay with you for the rest of your life."

Trek in: 3 hours - interesting terrain changes which took us through forest, over rocks, talus, creeks, etc. Hike ranged from downhill at the start to uphill at the finish (and return same). Trek out: just under 3 hours, mostly due to heavier traffic coming into the trail. Everyone was so friendly and curious about our over night. There were several sites to set up camp at Lake Ann or as an alternative, at the junction of Swift Creek and Lake Ann trails. They are obvious to the naked eye. It was very cold so if you are going to do this later in the season be sure to have a really warm down bag. The other thing we would recommend is ensuring you are not getting moisture in your tent as we did have some icicles by morning. There is a ground toilet but not close to all the sites so that is something to consider. We saw a very large black bear out behind the lake on the mountain which apparently roams the area. We had no encounters although I did hear something wandering around during the night and we just made lots of noise to scare it away. Make sure you use an ursak or bear barrel as there are no bear boxes on site. Make sure you take the time to enjoy the Mountain Hamsters (aka squeakers) which are running around on the rocks everywhere. We loved the hike and would recommend an overnight for anyone who likes to be in the quiet. The only noise was the wonderful waterfalls coming from the Mt. Shuksan glacier. Happy Trails
