Artist Point

Artist Point Professional Review and Guide

"Artist Point may have earned its name because of the oft-captured image of the broad meadows filled with summer wildflowers, backed by the towering rock summit of Mount Shuksan and the glacier-crowned Mount Baker, but many feel the area is even more beautiful and worthy of reproduction on film or canvas when shrouded with snow.

There is no formal trail, but climbing through the trees and meadows is easy with snowshoes. Pick the path of least resistance. The best bet is to climb steeply, but angle just a bit to the left on the ascent to avoid the steepest pitches. The summit is about 0.5 mile from the pass."

An amazing snowshoe experience. Follow established trails or to step into the virgin snow that covers the meadows and hillsides from the Heather Meadow parking area up to Artist Point and Huntoon Point. We ate lunch on a high point with Mt. Baker on one side and Mt. Shuksan on the other and gray jays for company. Breathtaking views. A fairly challenging ascent. Amazing snow. Warning: assess and avoid possible avalanche areas. But altogether a perfect snowshoe experience that I can't wait to repeat.

This trail opens a gate to unforgetable snowshoe experience. It soon leaves busy Mt. Baker Ski area and leads through large snowfields resembling dunes in Sahara desert, just all in while. The views are magnificent and surround visitors 360 degrees around.
