The San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands Professional Review and Guide

"The Inland Route through Washington heads east from Sidney, British Columbia, by ferry through the San Juan Islands to Anacortes. During the summer there are two departures each day. One is a nonstop cruise to Anacortes; the other makes a single stop at San Juan Island. While touring the islands is not essential to the southward journey, it is an opportunity you should not pass up. The San Juan Islands are a cyclist’s paradise. Even their size is perfect—too small to be toured enjoyably by car, and too large to be easily explored on foot.

The islands that have ferry service are the ideal size for a day-long tour including plenty of time to explore the viewpoints, parks, and historic monuments. Of the many islands that make up the San Juans, only four have state ferry service—San Juan, Orcas, Shaw, and Lopez. These four islands offer invigorating riding and excellent camping opportunities (limited on Shaw). Shaw and Lopez offer pleasant roads with low traffic volume but are very limited in the way of scenic or historical highlights and will not be mentioned further here. San Juan and Orcas offer numerous points of interest and should not be missed by southbound cyclists, even those with tight schedules."
