Olympic Coast - South Backpacking

Olympic Coast - South (Backpacking) Professional Review and Guide

"The hike along the southern Olympic coast is shorter but more difficult than the northern route. The wild terrain here is more rugged than it is to the north, and hikers must deal with greater tide problems, muddier inland paths, and two potentially dangerous stream crossings.

For experienced hikers all of this adds to the trip’s appeal, but this is a poor choice for inexperienced backpackers or those hiking with children. As compensation for the extra effort, the southern coastal strip has somewhat fewer people, no advance reservations are required, and the scenery is more dramatic. Note: Hikers with only one vehicle can use a shuttle service to move their car between trailheads while they hike."

The weather was absolutely amazing for the week that we were there. Admittedly everything was sopping wet from the rainfall before our trip. The waves and tides have to be respected. We saw quite a bit driftwood floating in the waves - beautiful to watch, dangerous as hell to swim near. We came from the north down to Mosquito Creek and couldn't find a way accross, so we just camped in a small clearing overlooking Alexander Island for 2 days. I'd love to go back, but I don't think even Bill Gates could bribe God to do what He did with the weather that week...absolutely amazing!
