Norse Peak Wilderness

Norse Peak Wilderness Professional Review and Guide

"The Norse Peak Wilderness loop has some great views of Mount Rainier, Noble Knob, and two alpine lakes, including serene, green-colored Echo Lake, one of the prettiest lakes in the wilderness. Elk frequent the trail, especially in early fall. Hearing an elk bugling during the rutting season is an unforgettable experience. Portions of this trail are used for the White River 50 Mile Trail Run held yearly in late July.

The race starts at Camp Sheppard and runs out to Corral Pass in the first half of the course. The route described here begins at Corral Pass, a popular staging area for backcountry horse expeditions. There are numerous hitching rails between the trailhead and a nearby camping area. Mutton Mountain, which looms just beyond Corral Pass, was named for the large number of sheep that ranged here at one time."
