When Mud Mountain Dam was completed in 1948, it held title as the largest earthen dam in the world. Its purpose is not to generate power but to restrain the potentially devastating force of the White River as it rushes along its course from Mt. Rainier’s massive Emmons Glacier. Besides constructing the dam, the US Army Corps of Engineers also created a recreation area around the dam, complete with hiking trails.
