Unsuspecting visitors to Flaming Geyser State Park might expect to marvel at water and steam spouting from the earth in an Old Faithful-like display. Instead, they find a tiny flame powered by a natural methane seep. While it is an interesting geological feature, most visitors quickly turn to other pleasures, such as enjoying their picnic, casting a line in one of the state’s top steelhead rivers or exploring the park’s trails. In the Green River valley northeast of Tacoma, Flaming Geyser State Park has long been a favorite recreation spot for locals. While the little flame gets headline billing, it’s the park’s setting on the Green River with its nearby gorge that’s the real draw. A large, popular picnic area, river access for kayakers, rafters, and anglers, and a network of trails bring people back again and again. Each of the park’s main trails is fairly short.
