Quartz Mountain Professional Review and Guide
"The route follows South Fork Manastash Creek in a beautiful gorge, eventually bringing you to the pretty riparian area at Buck Meadows. The summit of Quartz Mountain (6,400 feet) provides a terrific view of deep valleys, the North Cascades and beyond. Road 4510, from Lookout Mountain over South Cle Elum Ridge, is narrow, serpentine, and quite exciting if you encounter a logging truck.
This rugged volcanic land has been deeply incised by streams that drain into the Naches and Yakima rivers from the high ridges, creating many scenic canyons to explore. The narrow canyon of South Fork Manastash Creek, with its high and steep rock walls, is particularly beautiful. The graded canyon road (31), though washboarded, is easy and very scenic.
Watch for ATVs, motorcycles and logging trucks. Turn on your headlights, and bring a CB radio to monitor the logging-truck traffic. You’ll see the channel number they’re using painted on roadside rocks."
