As is often the case when hiking in the desert, the best walking route is actually an old road. These rough, four-wheel-drive dirt roads are legally open for driving, but only occasionally do folks drive them—mostly a stray hunter or two late in the fall. The two-track trails are too rough for most motorists, but they are perfect for hikers. This one leads into a glorious desert wildlife haven.
