Just the drive to this glorious area can be an adventure! The road is steep at times, rough in places, and sometimes totally blocked by high waters at the creek ford. However, patience and perseverance on the drive yield high payoffs on the hike. Wildlife abounds here, from flocks of mountain bluebirds to herds of elk. The lovely desert landscape is backed up by the craggy summits of the Cascades to the west and the deep, rocky cut of Yakima Canyon to the east. Additionally, the area is rich in human history as the Durr Road route in use today is the same route used by settlers traveling through the area in the 1880s. At times, the deep ruts carved by the steel-rimmed wheels on horse-drawn wagons are still visible parallel to the road.
