Mountain Lake - Mount Pickett Loop

Mountain Lake - Mount Pickett Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This pleasant 7.3-mile loop day hike leads through dense forests and past three glacial lakes in Moran State Park on the largest of the San Juan Islands. Due to its elevation, the hike makes a great year-round destination on one of the wildest remaining portions of the main San Juan Islands.

Midway between mainland Washington and Vancouver Island, hundreds of landforms rise out of the Pacific, ranging from tiny rocks to large, populated islands. Once part of the mainland, the San Juan Islands were overridden thousands of
years ago by the vast Cordilleran Ice Sheet grinding its way south from Canada."

Nice, scenic loop. About half of the 7 mile loop is currently 100% snow coverered; however, the whole trail is hikable in boots. February is a low-traffic time in the San Juans; my wife an I saw a total of six other people during the hike. I'd recommend if you're looking for a casual, peaceful hike and you're on Orcas Island for the weekend.
