Sucia, Matia, and Patos Islands - Orcas Island Professional Review and Guide
"A challenging open-water crossing to a popular series of islands, with intriguing geology, and numerous camping, hiking, and biking opportunities. Geologically, Sucia, Matia, and Patos Islands are relatives, all sharing their characteristic tilted beds of shale and sandstone.
The formations are, however, arguably best expressed on Sucia, where you’ll find spectacular cliffs, caves, and formations sculpted by water and wind, including the bizarre “mushroom” formation in Fox Cove. The island’s also home to huge boulders tumbled onto its beaches, including the Chinaman Rock on the northeast side of Shallow Bay, where Chinese being smuggled from Canada into the United States supposedly hid among the rocks."
