Road 1840 Shelf Lake Falls and Hawkins Lake

Road 1840: Shelf Lake Falls and Hawkins Lake Professional Review and Guide

"A small shallow lake, a gushing waterfall, and rugged cliffs in the headwaters of an unnamed tributary of Deer Creek set below 5274-foot Round Mountain. A great destination.

Oh! But wait a minute! Before putting the kids in the car for a fun day in the mountains, there are a few problems. First, the access road has water ditches passable to only those family cars with high clearance. The first mile of walking is on a decommissioned road with numerous water ditches and knee-deep brush. The last third mile is a boot-beaten path through a brush-covered clear-cut. Sounds terrible—and it is—but the rewards are worth every scratch and aching muscle."
