Toutle Trail Loop

Toutle Trail Loop Professional Review and Guide

"The Toutle Trail loop combines a gentle 4.6-mile paved road and gravel road climb, and an undulating nine sweet miles of trail. The 13.6 miles, with a few steep single-track descents and technical areas, will be challenging outing for the hardy beginner. It's a beautiful jaunt through a variety of landscapes- and trail surfaces- for riders of all levels. If beginners- and it is not recommended for true beginners- tire midway through the loop, Blue Horse Trail #237 and FS 81 provide bailouts.

The loop encircles Kalama Spring- the headwaters of the Kalama River- and parallels the Kalama on the southern section of the trail. The singletrack and cross-country ski trails you pass throughout the loop provide numerous exploration opportunities, while the mudflows, lava field, noble fir forest, and the Mt. St. Helens- dominated scenery give constant cause for viewing pause. The trail is mostly a rooty hardpacked, with rocky, pummy sections and a taste of lava-rock riding at Red Rock Pass."
