Sunrise Peak and Jumbo’s Shoulder Trail

Sunrise Peak and Jumbo’s Shoulder Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Meadows filled with wildflowers; miles of them. But also glorious views north and south to Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Mount Adams, and Mount Rainier. About those meadows: flowery meadows to a high point on an open ridge, and more flowery meadows to the site of a 1930s fire lookout. All this, plus blueberries, too!

Sunrise Peak is where you’ll find the site of the old fire lookout. The trail crosses a clear-cut and climbs steeply in forest, and then, at half a mile, the first decision: flowers first, or views?

The trail follows a ridge for a brief distance and then traverses a flower-covered slope to a junction at 5000 feet, 1 mile from the road. Go right on trail No. 262A, climbing steeply up the south side of the peak, crossing to the west side, and returning to the south side. Switchbacks bring you near the top, where you can use the old lookout’s iron handrail for assistance."
