Little Bald Mountain

Little Bald Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"A 29.8-mile ride with more than 4,000 feet of climbing, the Little Bald Mountain Loop is worth every ounce of the considerable energy expended. The mostly smooth road section travels among Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and western larch, which livens up the autumn landscape with its delicate gold hue. Views of Bald Mountain and Manastash Ridge can be seen to the east as you climb.

Your reward for topping out the road climb, actually 1.6 miles past the trailhead, is a mind-blowing view dominated by Old Scab Mountain before you and Mt. Rainier beyond it to the west; Boat Peak and American Ridge, Fifes Peak and Fifes Ridge as you turn north; Glacier Peak and the north Cascades, nearby Quartz Mountain, and distant Mt. Stuart due north; Manastash Ridge and Bethel Ridge as you turn east and south; and Mt. Aix, completing the circle. Awesome cliffs and rock formations lie below you as well."

Snow patches at top for approx. 1.25miles. Rest of trail in great shape.
Little Bald Mountain remains one of my favorite rides. The ride up the fire road can be grueling on a hot July day--I drank my entire Camelbak on the way up--but the views it offers at each turn are a an amazing combination of the picturesque and sublime. By the time you eat lunch at the top you will be refreshed enough for the ride. Once at the trailhead, the first hill down looks intimidating, but get beyond this and a whole range of trail riding awaits: rock fields, meadows, forest singletrack, switchbacks and my favorite, cliff edge riding. The trail skirts along cliff edges blanketed in wild mountain flowers, and the views beyond are captivatingly beautiful. Sometimes I have the trail a little messy with storm debris all around. Also the rock fields can be tricky. Take a long at least one spare. The trail is often deserted and silent, except the lone eagel soaring in the azure sky-- a sight to behold on July 4th!
